The school newspaper, yearbook, student announcements, and social media are all familiar ways to stay connected with fellow classmates and informed on school happenings, but another mode of communication is coming to Hartland High School. This new approach will take the form of a student run Radio Club. Radio may seem like an out-dated way to stay in the loop, but a group of Hartland students is determined to bring it back in a fresh, advanced way.

Starting this year, Hartland High School will introduce its Radio Club, sponsored by Paul Butzier and lead by juniors Dan Reinbold and Matt Szerlag. Don’t worry, you won’t be expected to pull out your antenna radio to tune into Hartland’s happenings. Instead, these radio programs are expected to air everyday after school on the application Spreaker, which can easily be downloaded onto your smartphone through both the Itunes’ App Store and Google Play. The club will meet every Friday during seminar time to discuss upcoming events and delegate roles for the station.

“We will distribute air time between different shows to make it available to all students who want to participate,” Reinbold said.

Depending on the circumstances, this club will try to meet every Friday during seminar time, and participation will include the $45 club fee. Topics will range from sports broadcasting to pop culture and even politics. Some of the club’s brainstormed outings include job-shadowing people who are employed at local radio stations.

“This would be our ultimate goal [job-shadowing]. One of our juniors, Jake Bokuniewicz’s father is even a DJ for WCSX 94.7,” Reinbold said.

With all of their ideas and aspirations, this is a promising group that could go far, not simply die out within the first few months. The formation of a Radio Club at Hartland High School exemplifies that our students don’t need a visual to understand one another; all they need is a form of communication to make their voices heard.
