Taking a Stand Against Suicide

The week of December 1, 2014 was suicide prevention week. An assembly was given to all students early on in the week for all of the students from Eric Hipple, a retired NFL player, and his daughter Tarah Hipple. They spoke about depression, suicide, and stress. Eric’s son, who was also Tarah’s brother, committed suicide while in high school. They both struggled in the aftermath of his death but are now using this tragic experience to spread awareness.

“Suicide awareness week changed my viewpoint by giving constant reminders about the true struggle peers deal with day to day. The assembly made me feel more responsible for what I say and do, ” senior Kristyn Kilbane said.

It’s easy to forget that every person is fighting a battle. This generation needs to be reminded that words and actions can and Eric and Tara want to show students that asking for help is okay. They don’t want anyone to ever feel unwanted or worthless.

Here at Hartland, the counselors and teachers are always available to talk and help. They genuinely care about all of the students and want the best for them. Suicide is never the answer; there is always a way to shed some light in darkness.
