Giving a True Gift This Christmas

This holiday season, consider giving a gift of companionship. Instead of buying a material gift for someone, something they’ll only use once or look at for an hour, consider doing something bigger. Do something for someone who needs your help more than you could imagine. Adopt an animal from the Humane Society of Livingston County.
The Humane Society of Livingston County houses dogs and cats that have been abandoned, released, or given up because of a lack of ability to care for them. There are animals ranging from young to old, with every size and breed you could imagine. This humane society is a no-kill shelter, and the volunteers there love and care for the animals very much and wish the best for them. Think about this decision to adopt beforehand because they want every pet to find a caring, permanent home. There is an adoption fee for pets, and this covers spay/neuter surgery, worming, dog heartworm test or cat leukemia/FIV test, age-appropriate vaccines, a microchip, and a HSLC ID tag w/collar. Certain fees are even discounted; for example if you buy one cat, you can get the second for a dollar. Senior animals are also cheaper for senior citizens. The fees vary based on the size and age of the pet. Many people in the high school have animals adopted from the shelter because it is local and a non-profit, so ask around and you will see the impact these animals have had on their lives.
If you don’t find yourself in a position to adopt, you can always donate to the shelter. They are a non-profit and independent shelter, so donations are always needed. If you’d rather have a first-hand experience with helping out at the shelter, consider volunteering. They are always looking for volunteers at the shelter. To become a volunteer, you must attend a volunteer orientation, and the next one is in January. You also have to attend classes to learn how to deal with the cats and dogs, and these are held periodically as well. There are many benefits to volunteering, and the greatest of these is the joy that you will bring to the animals’ lives. This holiday season, please consider giving your time or opening up your home to the Humane Society of Livingston County.
