I Will Never "Let It Go"

For the first time in forever, actually the first time since 2010 (“Tangled”), a new Disney film skyrocketed in popularity. “Frozen” was almost instantaneously set up for success. With a not-so-cliché storyline and the not-really-Prince-Charming twist, it brought something new to Disney – and that’s without mentioning Queen Elsa’s epic icy powers.

With Halloween experiencing its own sort of “Frozen” takeover (every little girl wanted to be Elsa, compared to the one girl I saw as Anna), we arrived at a Christmas season this year that was highly anticipated to be covered in the characters of the new Disney classic. Snow is heavily associated with the kingdom setting of Arendelle. Disney has jumped on this. They renamed their Christmas parade “Disney’s “Frozen” Christmas Parade”. They are planning a replacement “Frozen”-themed attraction for one of Epcot’s older boat rides. And at night, LED light shows take Cinderella’s iconic castle and turn it into Elsa’s ice palace.

A lot of criticism has erupted with this news, but I say, “keep going, Disney!” The main audience at the theme parks is little kids, and there isn’t a child I know who didn’t love the beautiful, mysterious Queen Elsa, the relatable, sweet Anna, the adorable, puppy-like reindeer Sven, or the hilarious, loveable snowman Olaf. If it makes kids happy, then who cares? It’s all about money too. Being the #6 most popular Disney movie according to disneymovieslist.com, the #5 highest grossing animated film of all time, and taking home two Oscars from the 2014 Academy Awards, I think “Frozen” is making the dough. Connecting generations, inspiring kids with a message to never be afraid to show their true selves, and a sweet love story on the backdrop of surprisingly excellent songs. I only see the love for “Frozen” as being an open door for everyone…especially Disney.
